HYDROGEN PURIFICATION

PURIFICATION OF HYDROGEN for MORE THAN 80 YEARS

SILICA supplied the first hydrogen purification plant based on a silica gel process already in 1941.
Since then, the purification technology has been continuously developed and improved several times.
However, one thing always remains the same:

SILICA DELIVERS ON TIME IN OUTSTANDING QUALITY!

HYDROGEN:
ENERGY SOURCE OF THE FUTURE

The uses of the lightest element on earth are very diverse. Hydrogen can be used as an energy storage medium, to generate electricity and heat or as an extremely active reactant in the chemical industry.

When hydrogen is burned (oxidised) to generate energy, the reaction product is not waste but only elemental water. If the hydrogen was previously produced from water by electrolysis powered by regenerative wind or solar power, a completely CO2-free energy cycle is created in which the “green” hydrogen is used as a carrier and storage element.

In addition to the electrolytic splitting of water, it is also possible to produce hydrogen from natural gas or biogas (methane) by pyrolysis. In pyrolysis, which is also completely CO2-free, methane is split into its elementary components carbon and hydrogen. The “turquoise” hydrogen produced in this way can be used as a CO2-free energy carrier, while the waste product carbon (carbon black) is used as a pigment in paints, in toners or in tyre production.

For both technologies for CO2-free hydrogen production, SILICA supplies purification plants and customised plant components or realises the complete assembly of hydrogen plants on behalf of our customers.

MODULAR SKIDS FOR
ELECTROLYSIS PLANTS

For the production of green hydrogen, SILICA develops and manufactures sophisticated, tailor-made hydrogen purification plants, which are perfectly adapted to the requirements of the respective electrolysers.

In addition to purification plants, SILICA also offers the manufacturing of other components, up to the complete turnkey assembly of the electrolysis plant.

Innovative and universal

REGENERATION WITH GAS BOOSTER

SILICA purification plants are basically characterised by a very large operating window between 10% and 100% of the specified flow rate. High reliability and purity are guaranteed for all operating points. Regeneration of the adsorbent remains problematic at low flow rates, since the necessary desorption energy must be introduced with a minimum volume flow of regeneration gas, which, however, is not available during partial load operation of the electrolysis.

The patented HyBOOST process solves this problem. A gas booster completely decouples the regeneration from the operation of the electrolyser, so that the adsorbers can be regenerated even when the electrolyser is switched off. Regeneration always takes place under the same optimum conditions, regardless of the operation of the electrolyser. Since regeneration with the HyBOOST process can always be fully completed even after the electrolyser is switched off, specification-compliant, saleable hydrogen is produced immediately after the electrolyser is switched back on.

INTEGRATED REACTOR PREHEATING

The Deoxo reactor can also be integrated by means of a further circuit connected to the gas booster. When the electrolyser is switched off, the reactor can be maintained at its operating temperature and does not cool down. When the electrolyser is switched on again, the reactor already has the necessary operating temperature and operates in the optimum operating window for oxygen removal.

HYDROGEN CLEANING TECHNOLOGY

In the case of electrolytically produced hydrogen, the residual oxygen contained is usually first removed by catalysts. In a subsequent drying process, a hydrogen purity of 99.999 % is achieved. If required, higher purity levels can be achieved with additional measures.

Besides purification plants, SILICA also offers the production of further components up to the complete assembly of the turnkey electrolysis plant.

For reduction processes, SILICA also supplies customised hydrogen recycling plants. High-purity metal powders, such as tungsten carbide, are produced in reduction furnaces. In this process, the highly reactive hydrogen combines with the undesirable oxygen from the metal powder to form water. Instead of blowing off the contaminated wet hydrogen, it can be purified with a SILICA recycling plant and used again from scratch.
